Art making Material - 1

In Art therapy, there are many kinds of media we use for art making.

It could be simply a black drawing pencil, texta, colour pencils.

There are more common painting materials too; that are Water colour, Poster colour, Acrylic paint or Oil paints.

2-dimensional  materials can be colour papers, origami papers, collage papers, magazine, etc

3-dimensional stuff can be oil clay, water clay, paper clay, plastercine, knitting thread, beads, Mosaic tiles, junk parts etc.

All above mentioned materials can be used for art making to create metaphor, expression, emotional texture, given meaning, or of course beauty.

In Art therapy, we believe in theory for these mentioned material and Art therapist will carefully choose art material for client's specific needs.
Vija Lusebrink was the person who introduced the theoretical concept of art materials and its characteristics - ' Expressive Therapy Continuum (ETC)'. She theorised the concept of art material "fluidity vs solidity" as levels of control( in material use) and levels of creative inspiration. By knowing these relationship, it is helpful to choose appropriate material for specific situation/client/aim.

Nowadays, Catherine Moon introduces variety of art media and its use, possibility and limitations.
It is such a inspirational! If you want to know more about her study, explanation and explorational work in material, You should check 'Materials & Media in art therapy'. Its Catherine's new book with DVD-rom.
